Thammasat University Revitalizes “Ko Subdistrict(ตำ บลก้อ) Thai Textiles” to Drive Creative Economy and Sustainable Fashion

Thammasat University has launched a comprehensive research initiative to enhance traditional textiles from Ko Subdistrict in Lamphun Province, a community uniquely located within Mae Ping National Park. The project aims to strengthen local livelihoods while elevating Thai textiles into contemporary fashion markets. As Thailand’s creative economy continues to expand—valued at over 1.44 trillion baht and accounting for more than 8% of the national GDP—traditional textiles remain a key sector with strong domestic and international demand.

The research project applies a holistic design framework to support every stage of local textile production, from cotton cultivation and fiber processing to weaving, dyeing, and garment design. Natural dyeing techniques using local plant materials help reduce environmental impact, while community workshops and new tools support skill development and product diversification. These efforts increase product value and create sustainable income streams, aligning with SDG goals on sustainable communities, responsible consumption, and environmental protection.

Textile creations from the project have been showcased at major design and research events nationwide and are currently featured in Thammasat University’s sustainability exhibition. The exhibition highlights more than 40 works exploring climate action, circular economy, sustainable agriculture, cultural diversity, and community resilience. Through this initiative, the textiles of Ko Subdistrict are emerging as a model for integrating traditional craftsmanship with innovation, fashion, and long-term sustainable development.
