Status of Thailand’s Songkran as UNESCO Heritage Not Affected by Cambodia’s Submission of Its New Year to UNESCO

The Ministry of Culture has reaffirmed that “Songkran in Thailand,” traditional Thai New Year festival, was officially inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2023, with full and recognized status.

Referring to Cambodia’s submission of its traditional Khmer New Year for UNESCO’s consideration as cultural heritage, Minister of Culture Sabeeda Thaised said that the submission would not affect Thailand's existing "Songkran" inscription.

Thailand is also actively advancing other cultural heritage elements for international recognition, including Chud Thai (traditional Thai attire), Muay Thai (Thai-style boxing), Pha Khao Ma (multifunctional cloths), and Loy Krathong Festival. Notably, Chud Thai is scheduled for UNESCO consideration in late 2026.

The Ministry of Culture also reaffirmed its commitment to preserving, promoting, and safeguarding Thailand’s cultural heritage, while working in a proactive manner to strengthen global recognition and foster pride in Thai cultural identity worldwide.
