TOD Urban Development and Transportation System.

Transit Oriented Development.

Thailand has developed a Transit Oriented Development (TOD) master plan as a result of its study of urban development and transportation infrastructure. The Ministry of Transport was given the task of establishing guidelines for using the area along the infrastructure route for basic transportation, such as trains, electric trains, and high-speed trains, along with other relevant agencies.

TOD is one of the concepts for urban and urban development along with the development of transportation infrastructure, focusing on the development of areas around public transportation stations that are the centers of travel connections and determining the form of land use for maximum benefit to build the community around the station to be a quality community, livable, pleasant to live in, attractive for business investment, and to promote travel activities in and out of the area

TOD’s Urban Management is the transformation of a decentralized city into a compact city through bounded land development and a way to mitigate the ramifications of urban growth.

With such development, government agencies will invest in the rail transportation infrastructure and the private sector will develop areas near mass transit stations to balance the government’s investment costs and land development profits as directed by the government appropriately and there is a balance between the source of work and housing (Job and Housing Balance). There are railway stations as the center in the inner radius developed into commercial areas and the outer areas into residential areas that are adjusted according to the potential of each station.

Benefits from developing areas around bus stations according to TOD guidelines

1.The transportation benefits bring a certain passenger volume to the rail mass transit system as it brings the origin and destination of the Work Trip to the TOD around the station and increases its reachability.

2.Benefits of living in a community with a variety of income groups include housing development at a price appropriate for the target population’s status because there is a source of employment and access appropriate to each role and duty station, easing pressure to increase the value of the original urban area due to development of the area surrounding the rail transit station in potential areas, and related to urban renewal in the inner areas.

TOD not only solves the problem of urban growth but also helps Thailand achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that make cities and settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
