UNESCO announces Phayao Province as a city of lifelong learning

Phayao Province has been officially accredited by UNESCO to join the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities in 2022. This is a significant achievement under the cooperation between Phayao University, the Provincial Administration Organization, Phayao Municipality, and the Program Management Unit on Area-Based Development (PMU A). Together, they have pushed urban development projects in various dimensions to enhance the city's learning and economic mechanisms for sustainable growth through the use of “local knowledge, local wisdom, and regional cooperation" as an intermediary to drive the development of happiness and generate income for the people of Phayao, which meets the criteria.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic affecting Phayao province, there are no tourists and trade, and more workers are returning home, so the University of Phayao has presented the research Learning City, thus jointly designing cultural funding, knowledge, and information of Phayao province and designing learning together. The municipality has a center for improving the quality of life and promoting careers for older people where can be used as a source of training and career promotion for those interested in learning. Sewing, bagging, baking, etc., are being taught by community sage, also called community innovator, as a guide and instructor for those interested in increasing some skills for Phayao people. There are subjects on it to become a "lifelong learning project."

Being certified as a member of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities is an opportunity to develop and enhance the economy and management of Phayao in many other areas. In particular, there is an opportunity to exchange knowledge internationally and the opportunity to receive support, understanding, personnel exchange, or cooperation with other cities abroad to drive economic development, education, the development of tourist routes for foreigners, and to support the development of other cities in the province in the future.
