At present, the demand for foreign workers in Thailand is increasing, largely because there may not be enough domestic workers to meet the demand, or some fields are unable to find Thai workers who have the skills for the necessary jobs.  As a result, a large number of foreign workers have come to work in Thailand, both legally and illegally.

       In order to see the advantages and disadvantages of complying with and breaking the law, you can consider the following details before deciding to work in Thailand:

Advantages of working legally 

• Receive protection in seven cases (illness, child welfare, disability, maternity, death, old age, and unemployment after workers register for social security);
• Receive wages and welfare according to the Labor Law.  If the employer fails to comply with the contract, the employee can file a complaint with the Ministry of Labor;
• Able to stay openly in the country as specified in the employment contract;
• There is a fixed and verifiable place to work 

Disadvantages of working illegally 

• Must stay in hiding.  If caught, they will face imprisonment of up to five years, a fine of 2,000 to 100,000 baht, or both;
• There is no work as a base and cannot change jobs;
• May be oppressed or abused by employers, and receive low wages, no welfare benefits;
• In case of illness or accident during work, the law cannot be applied.
