Bangkok Public Park Guide

      Living in a big city like Bangkok, with the crowding and “busyness” common to all cities, people in this metropolis like to spend their free time, especially on holidays, relaxing and enjoying the beauty of flowering plants, ornamental plants and perennials that provide shade from the heat from the sun, and if they’re lucky, they sometimes have the opportunity to meet the animals that feed in the park, including squirrels, chipmunks, birds, and species of butterflies, which visitors a few moments of peace and happiness.

      Currently (2022), Bangkok has 8,810 green spaces in the form of parks and gardens, large and small. There are 40 large parks across 50 districts of Bangkok, with a total area of 25,541 rai (40,866,481.92 square meters, 4,086.65 hectares), which means that the amount of green space per per person is 7.31 square meters. In addition to parks being a place for recreation, some also have equipment for exercise or have paved paths for running and cycling, popular exercises in parks, and some places allow dogs.

Some popular parks where people relax and enjoy activities

1. Benjakitti Forest Park (Khlong Toei District, near Asoke Road) was built under the concept of a forest garden that coexists with water like a large sponge that bears the flood;

2. Suan Luang Rama 9 (Prawet District) is considered the largest botanical garden in Bangkok, with many plant species arranged according to taxonomy and ecology, and it has three large fountain pools; 

3. Lumpini Park (Pathum Wan District, near Silom Road) is a "multi-purpose garden" with a shady atmosphere and large trees throughout the park, which is made even more beautiful with a variety of ornamental flower gardens. People like to come to relax by strolling around, and some do various karmic activities such as tai chi (Chinese “boxing”), and they can play games, listen to music, take  dancing lessons, or read books at the library;

4. Wachirabenchatat Park, or Rot Fai Park (Chatuchak District), was developed from a former golf course. On the grounds, there are many activities to do. People like to come to relax, ride bicycles, and visit Bangkok Butterfly Garden and Insectarium;

5. Queen Sirikit Park (Chatuchak District) is a botanical garden collecting more than 2,000 species of plants.

Popular activities at the park

1.To relax and enjoy nature;

2. To work out (though some activities, such as swimming, cycling, basketball, and fitness activities are available only in certain locations);

3. To take photos;

4. To study nature;

5. To take their dog for a walk.


Guidelines for using the parks properly

1. Signs or construction are not allowed;

2. Cooking is not allowed;

3. Selling is not allowed, except for the shops that have contracted with the park;

4. Amplifiers for music and speaking are not allowed except for exercising, with permission, between 5:00 and 9:00 a.m. or 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. Using the electricity of the park is not allowed;

5. Smoking, drinking alcohol, and gambling are prohibited;

6. Plucking leaves and flowers is prohibited;


Closing-opening hours: From 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

How to get to popular parks: Public buses, BTS Skytrain, MRT Subway, private cars, taxis, motorbike taxis, and personal bicycles, etc.
