Green industry project, upgrading production for a sustainable environment

Industry contributes significantly to human well-being, but traditional industrial production processes have a significant negative impact on the environment as well as human and animal health. This is why the United Nations has designated sustainable industrial improvement as one of the Sustainable Development Goals, with a focus on increasing the efficiency of resource utilization and the use of technology, as well as developing clean and environmentally friendly industrial processes.

Thailand is moving toward Sustainable Development by ratifying an international agreement to keep global average temperature rise below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and efforts will be made to keep the target temperature rise below 1.5 degrees Celsius to reduce the risk of severe climate change impacts.

Therefore, the Ministry of Industry has encouraged factories and establishments to become “green industries” by implementing continuous manufacturing processes and environmental management in order to conduct environmentally friendly and socially responsible business operations both inside and outside the organization throughout the supply chain. A total of 40,799 factories and establishments participated in the project and received certificates from 2011 to 2020. The transition to a green economy is divided into five stages.

As a result of establishments continuously applying for certificates to participate in the green industry project, Thailand’s greenhouse gas emissions decreased significantly between 2017 and 2019, totaling 164,473 tons CO2 equivalent.

The goal is to drive more than 71,130 factories under supervision across the country to develop into green industries by 2025 in order to comply with the action plan for promoting and developing establishments toward green industries.
