Grand Finale! Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival 2024 “72nd Birthday of His Majesty, City of Candles, City of Dharma”

When thinking of the most famous Candle Festival in Thailand, one cannot help but think of Ubon Ratchathani’s Candle Festival. This year’s event was grander than ever under the theme “Celebrating the 72nd Birthday of His Majesty, City of Candles, City of Dharma, Radiant City of Four Lights.”

The recently concluded Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival marked its 123rd year. This year’s grand celebration was held in honor of His Majesty the King’s 6th Cycle Birthday Anniversary. The festival featured numerous activities, including the "Visit the Community, See Candle-Making Traditions" in 12 temple communities, the "Faithful Art Lights" show, which transformed Ubon Ratchathani into a city of lights, colors, and exquisite art, and the sale of community economic products (OTOP) at the cultural square next to the Ubon Ratchathani City Pillar Shrine.

The highlight of the event was the 2024 Ubon Ratchathani Candle Procession, with more than 49 candles handcrafted by communities across 25 districts of Ubon Ratchathani. The procession included traditional dances from community groups, temples, educational institutions, universities, and schools in the province. This event was not only full of fun and the beauty of local traditions but also helped stimulate the local economy and promote Thailand’s Soft Power.

This year, the Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival was elevated to a global event with spectacular activities that amazed both locals and visiting tourists. Everyone agreed that this year’s Candle Festival was the grandest yet, with an estimated economic impact of over 800 million baht, greatly benefiting the economy of Ubon Ratchathani and neighboring provinces.
