Thailand Develops Essential Food Ingredient List (Positive List) to Support Health Product Research for Global Competition

The Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has introduced a Positive List, featuring six approved health claims for food ingredients. This initiative helps reduce research costs by 70% and shortens product development time from two years to just two months, facilitating the creation of future foods like functional foods, medical foods, and alternative proteins that cater to global health trends.

Recently, the FDA collaborated with the Office of the National Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Policy Council (MHESI), the Office of the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), and other research networks to expand the Positive List to 150 items by 2027. The goal is to boost Thailand's food industry value to 500 billion baht, attract high-tech investors, and enhance the competitiveness of Thai SMEs in the global market.

SMEs can directly use approved health claims on product labels without additional permission, making their products stand out with verified health benefits. This increases their access to the global market due to international recognition of safety and efficacy standards based on global research. Meanwhile, farmers producing high-quality raw materials like turmeric or salted eggs benefit from a comprehensive production chain, from cultivation to high-value product processing.

This collaboration is driven by the MHESI - Agriculture network through research funding for herbal extracts and food innovations, aiming to develop competitive Health Tech products on the global stage.
