EGAT, NRCT and Big Brothers Network Expand Stingless Bee Project to Restore Forests and Combat PM2.5

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), in collaboration with the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) and public-private partners, has launched Phase 3 of the “Big Brothers: Forest and Social Economy Development through Stingless Bees” project. The initiative aims to promote stingless bee farming as a sustainable source of income for local communities while supporting forest restoration, biodiversity conservation, and long-term efforts to reduce PM2.5 air pollution.

Speaking at the project launch, Mr. Chaiyos Tangvorakulchai, Assistant Governor for Sustainability Management of EGAT, and Dr. Wiparat De-Ong , Executive Director of NRCT, emphasized the importance of integrating scientific research, community participation, and environmental stewardship. Stingless bees play a vital role in pollination, helping improve crop yields and enhance the regeneration of forests and natural ecosystems. The project has already generated positive economic outcomes in several provinces by creating additional income opportunities through stingless bee products and related activities.

In its third phase, the project will focus on expanding conservation efforts in community forests, beginning with the Sakaerat Biosphere Reserve in Nakhon Ratchasima Province. By increasing green spaces and supporting ecological balance, the initiative is expected to strengthen carbon absorption, improve biodiversity, and help mitigate the impacts of haze and PM2.5 pollution. The project reflects EGAT’s commitment to sustainable development by combining environmental protection, community empowerment, and economic growth to create lasting benefits for both society and the environment.
