Getting to Know the Thai-Cambodian Friendship Bridge (Ban Nong Ian - Stung Bot)

Let's get to know the Thai-Cambodian Friendship Bridge, a route that links and cements our strong relations. The Thai-Cambodian Friendship Bridge (Ban Nong Ian - Stung Bot) is situated between Aranyaprathet district, Sa Kaeo province in Thailand, and Poipet city, Banteay Meanchey province in Cambodia.

Thailand and Cambodia have mutually agreed to open a new permanent border crossing under the concept of "separating people and commodities". This resulted in the construction of a new border bridge in Aranyaprathet district, Sa Kaeo province, linking it to Stung Bot village, O’Chrov district, Banteay Meanchey province, Cambodia. The purpose of this development was to facilitate cross-border goods transportation. Meanwhile, the area around Ban Khlong Luek has been developed to cater to the travel and trade needs of locals and tourists. Therefore, a road development project has been initiated to support the special economic zone along Aranyaprathet border - Thailand/Cambodia border. The project includes new connecting roads, the Prum Hod Canal Bridge, and border checkpoints.

This bridge, also known as the Thai-Cambodian Friendship Bridge (Ban Nong Ian - Stung Bot), was inaugurated by General Prayut Chan-o-cha, the Prime Minister of Thailand, and Hun Sen, the Prime Minister of Cambodia, in a ceremony marking the completion of the construction on April 22, 2019, before opening to the public in 2022.

The Thai-Cambodian Friendship Bridge (Ban Nong Ian - Stung Bot) is a key part of the international road network development aimed at fostering road connectivity between Thailand and its neighboring countries, which will result in seamless connectivity within the region.

This project supports various important road networks such as the Southern Economic Corridor under the framework of economic cooperation in the Greater Mekong Subregion, and the Asian Highway No.1, which is a significant route of the ASEAN Highway Network, under the framework of the ASEAN Economic Community, connecting Myanmar - Thailand - Cambodia - Vietnam.

The Thai-Cambodian Friendship Bridge (Ban Nong Ian - Stung Bot) is a symbol of the strong, enduring, and long-lasting friendship between the two countries. The bridge's construction used a balanced cantilever method, which involves extending the bridge on both sides and using prestressed cables to bear the weight of the bridge structure. This method is suitable for constructing a bridge across a river without using supports from the bottom, reducing the amount of concrete formwork, and allowing construction in multiple stages. Prior to construction, the opinions and participation of the public and all relevant sectors were sought to maximize the benefits for the people and harmonize with the traditional way of life.

The bridge's lighting design was inspired by the lotus flower, a symbol of enlightenment and purity in Buddhism, blended with the delicate patterns of Thai and Cambodian art. It manifests as a line of luminous lamps, reflecting the prosperous cultural heritage of both countries.
