The Ministry of Transport is pushing forward the development of the railway network, as outlined in the 20-year master plan for Thai transport system development. This is aimed at enhancing the potential of various regions in the country and increasing competitiveness, particularly in the two upper northern provinces, namely Phrae, Phayao, Chiang Rai, and Lampang province.
The project “Den Chai – Chiang Rai - Chiang Khong Dual-Track Railway” will serve as a new railway transport system linking the transport of agricultural products, especially temperature-controlled transportation of agricultural goods, to Laos and the People's Republic of China.
The “Den Chai – Chiang Rai - Chiang Khong Dual-Track Railway” spans a total distance of 323.10 km, crossing four provinces (Phrae, Phayao, Lampang, and Lamphun) in 17 districts and 59 sub-districts, with a total of 26 train stations and stops.
There will be four container yards (CY) and freight handling areas at Phrae Station, Phayao Station, Pa Daet Station, and Chiang Rai Station, which are linked to the Chiang Khong freight interchange center.
The construction of the project will involve tunnel excavation, with the Mae Ka Tunnel in Phayao province being one of the four tunnels in the project. The tunnel spans a length of 2,700 meters (including both sides totaling 5,400 meters) in the contracted Ngao - Chiang Rai area. Currently, about 42-44 meters have been dug, and it is estimated that the excavation will take about four years. The longest tunnel in the project, with a length of 6.2 km, is located in Ngao district, Lampang province.
The progress of the project is currently in the process of property buyback contracts, with more than 50% completed, and the area has been handed over to the contractor to proceed with the construction.
The Ministry of Transport aims for the “Den Chai – Chiang Rai - Chiang Khong Dual-Track Railway” project to become a logistics hub for the region, facilitating travel, economics, trade, and investments between Thailand, Laos, and China, along the North-South Economic Corridor (NSEC). This will boost tourism and employment opportunities, as well as improving the quality of life for people in the upper northern provinces.
