Whenever the rainy season rolls around, aside from climbing mountains to enjoy the wildflowers or chilling in the middle of scenic rice fields, one popular activity for adventure-seekers is white-water rafting on fast-flowing rivers. Today, we're taking you on a thrilling adventure at the Khek River in Phitsanulok Province, which is renowned as one of Thailand's top five destinations for the ultimate rafting experience.
Originating from the rugged Phetchabun Mountain Range and coursing through Wang Thong District, the Khek River runs parallel to the Highway No. 12 (Phitsanulok-Lom Sak route). From late November till early March, the river's crystal-clear waters gently flow, making it an ideal spot for a casual swim. You just need to watch out for accidents caused by rocks and rapids. However, when the rainy season kicks in, torrential downpours turn the calm waters into fierce, tea-colored rapids, perfect for an adrenaline-pumping rafting adventure.
The rafting route along the Khek River spans around 8 kilometers, crossing a total of 15 rapids. It offers a mix of difficulties, ranging from levels 1-5, starting from the easiest to the most challenging. Adventurers begin their journey from the top of the Song Waterfall, battling the waters at levels 1-2 initially, and then escalating to levels 3-4 or even 4-5 before gradually relaxing to levels 2-3 towards the end, to catch their breath in the final stretch. Throughout the course, you'll encounter various rapids – some twisty and curvy like an 'S', some gradually rising like a staircase, ensuring a diverse and exciting experience.
A unique advantage of rafting on the Khek River is its proximity to the road, which means adventurers don't have to trudge through dense forests carrying inflatable rafts to the starting point – it's just a short walk away from the parking area. The journey offers stunning views along the way, with occasional breaks to rest and catch your breath. Each raft is manned by trained professionals at the helm and the rear, ensuring you don't need to be an expert paddler or advanced level rafter. However, it's vital to wear safety gear, like life jackets and helmets, and strictly follow the instructions of the guides for a safe and enjoyable experience.
When it comes to rafting on the Khek River, caution is key. The river can get exceptionally rough during the monsoon season when it rains heavily. While tourists may not be able to enjoy the waterfalls during these times, they can certainly enjoy an exhilarating rafting adventure. However, it's important for prospective rafters to be good swimmers, physically and mentally prepared, and be mindful of their safety. After all, the more turbulent the water, the higher the chances of accidents. So, it's all about balancing thrill with caution when embarking on this exhilarating adventure.
