From Royal Initiative to Action: The Nong Saeng Monkey Cheek Dredging Project to Alleviate Drought in Agricultural Areas

On December 19, 1996, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great provided a valuable royal initiative regarding water management in the Chi River Basin. His Majesty observed that during the flood season, water would inundate both sides of the Chi River, including streams, swamps, ponds, and public areas. However, in the dry season, these waters would recede rapidly, leading to water shortages. He therefore suggested finding ways to retain water in the area to be used for agriculture.

Based on this royal initiative, the Royal Irrigation Department developed the Nong Saeng Monkey Cheek Dredging Project, including related structures, in Tha Sala Subdistrict, Mancha Khiri District, Khon Kaen Province. This area frequently faces floods during the rainy season and water shortages in the dry season. The project covers a water source area of approximately 129 rai, with plans to dredge 120 rai to an average depth of 3.50 meters. This will allow for water storage of up to 780,000 cubic meters. Additionally, a spillway and five water intake structures will be constructed to enhance water management efficiency.

Once completed, this project is expected to provide immense benefits to the local community. Approximately 500 households, or 747 people, in Tha Sawan Village, Tha Sala Subdistrict, and nearby villages will have sufficient water for consumption. Furthermore, the project will support about 1,330 rai of agricultural land and serve as a breeding ground for aquatic animals, helping to strengthen the community’s food security and economy.

Currently, the project is in the process of being included in the 2024 budget plan, reflecting the continued efforts to carry on the royal initiative. Despite the passage of time, the value and importance of sustainable water management remain evident. The Nong Saeng Monkey Cheek Dredging Project not only addresses drought and flooding issues but also ensures long-term water and agricultural security for the people in the area, in line with the royal aspirations of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great, who sought to improve the well-being of his people in a sustainable manner.
