A Geographical Indication (GI) product is an indication of the uniqueness or quality, reputation or exclusivity of a product associated with a particular locality.
Currently, countries Globally, GI products are safeguarded by World Trade Organization (WTO) accords, such as the Trade-Related Intellectual Property Rights Agreement (TRIPS). It was discovered that there was combined global coverage for more than 65,900 GI goods.
As for Thailand, the Department of Intellectual Property has registered GI products of Thailand in all 77 provinces, totaling 176 items, divided into various product groups as follows: rice, food, vegetables and fruits, fabrics (silk-cotton), handicrafts- industry, and wine-liquor.
Famous Thai GI products in each region are:
Northern region: Doi Tung Coffee – Doi Chang Coffee, Chiang Rai Province, Phu Lae Pineapple, Chiang Rai Province, Lamphun Yok Dok Silk, Lamphun Province.
Northeastern region: Ban Chiang pottery, Udon Thani Province, Praewa silk, Kalasin Province, Thung Kula Rong Hai jasmine rice, Roi Et Province, Yasothon Province, Surin Province, Maha Sarakham Province and Si Sa Ket Province.
Central region: Koh Kred pottery, Nonthaburi Province, Phetchabun sweet tamarind, Phetchabun Province
Southern region: Tubtim Siam pomelo, Pak Phanang, Nakhon Si Thammarat province, Sangyod rice, Phatthalung province, Chaiya salted egg, Surat Thani province.
And most recently, Nam Dok Mai mangoes, Samut Prakan Province, Samut Prakan Province were registered as the 176th item on May 11, 2022.
