The Legend of Rooster Bowl GI Lampang

“Rooster Bowl”

We have seen and used rooster bowls at boat noodle restaurants or many times when we had a chance to travel to Lampang Province. You can’t miss having to buy souvenirs-souvenirs like a rooster bowl to bring back with you, but do you know where the rooster bowl comes from?

“Rooster Bowl” will have a rooster pattern on the side of the cup. The rooster is a symbol of Lampang Province and registered geographical indications or products means “Rooster Bowl” has been registered as a geographical indication or product GI (Geographical Indications) from the Department of Intellectual Property on September 12, 2013.

With the establishment of a rooster bowl factory and kiln at Wong Wian Yai and Phetchaburi Road, Bangkok, the rooster bowl in Lampang Province got its start with the Chinese who made it in China and moved to live in Bangkok and Lampang Province. Later in the year 1957, moved up to set up a factory and kiln in Lampang Province because there was kaolin clay that was most suitable for the production of rooster bowls. Before the Chinese joined together to set up the first factory named Ruam Samakhi Factory after having found a source of kaolin at Jae Hom District during the years 1959-1962.

Then, more factories were established by Chinese groups, which made it the source of more rooster bowls than any other place in the country. Many crockery factories were established between the years of 1962 and 1967, but they were not successful due to the loss of raw materials, uneven product quality, low prices, and ability to only sell locally. As a result, the Lampang Pottery Club was founded in 1973 with the aim of promoting the standardization of the price of chicken brand bowls rather than price competition among members. At the beginning of the establishment, there were 18 factories in total.

Later, in the year 1989, the Lampang Pottery Association was established with the purpose of coordinating with the government for members of the association and organizing activities to publicize the ceramic industry to be widely known. The association, together with Lampang Province, has organized an event “Lampang Ceramic Fair” between 1-10 December every year. The event has been held continuously until now because it can attract the attention of both Thai and foreign tourists.
