Uses for cannabis and hemp: Culinary, medical, and industrial

     Uses for Cannabis and Hemp

     Cannabis is a plant that we can use every component of, including the bark, fibers, leaves, and seeds. As a result of the policy of the Ministry of Public Health to drive medical cannabis policy and promote cannabis and hemp as a new economic crop, various parts of cannabis and hemp have been used in a wide variety of products:

  • Healthcare for people;
  • Veterinary pharmaceuticals;
  • Food and beverages;
  • Oils and cosmetics;
  • Clothing and textiles.

     Regarding medicinal cannabis extracts, numerous dosage forms and products are available, including inhalation, oral administration, skin administration in the form of lotions or transdermal patches, and food administration. Each form offers a unique cannabinoid dose and is tailored to the specific treatment objectives and the requirements of each patient. It must be selected in line with the disease and symptoms of the patient.

     Cannabinoids are abundant in cannabis, with THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol) being the most prevalent. While CBD has the effect of reducing inflammation, reducing spasms, and inhibiting the development of many tumor cells in vitro, it also promotes the growth of some tumor cells.

     For some diseases or conditions, there is clear academic evidence that cannabis will aid in the treatment, including nausea and vomiting in chemotherapy patients, difficult-to-treat epilepsy and drug-resistant epilepsy, CNS pain for which other therapies have failed, spasticity in multiple sclerosis patients, anorexia in underweight AIDS patients, and improving quality of life for patients receiving palliative care or end-of-life patients.

     Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, (non-synthetic multiple sclerosis), and other diseases for which there is evidence indicating a benefit from cannabis still require additional research support.

     Cannabis’s bark, core, and stem have numerous uses, including the production of natural fibers that are supple, resilient, and environmentally friendly. It is also used in the construction industry as fiberboard and concrete insulation, in the textile industry, where it is used to make bedding materials for animals such as horses due to its ability to absorb moisture well, in the paper industry, the gas industry, and oil industry to absorb and remove oil spills, in the plastics industry as a material for bulletproof vests, boots, upholstery fabrics, and carpets, and it is used in the manufacturing of automotive components.
