Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria for environmental sustainability and energy conservation

      The Global Sustainable Tourism Council has established tourism standards as a global basis for everyone connected with the tourism industry to understand, and tourist attractions and businesses can apply GSTC standards to their own businesses.

      Ecotourism and natural resource conservation, as well as energy conservation, are currently popular tourism trends. According to the GSTC, one of the global sustainable tourism criteria is energy conservation. Tourist attractions must have energy conservation promotion systems, energy efficiency measures, and fuel consumption reductions in order to be environmentally sustainable. Tourist attractions must encourage tourism-related businesses that conserve energy and use renewable energy technologies.

      The criteria for energy conservation have been established, which include being a tourist destination that aims to reduce energy consumption, improve energy efficiency, and increase the use of renewable energy, as well as being a tourist attraction that systematically encourages the business sector to measure, monitor, and reduce energy consumption and report results to the public. In terms of indicators, they are as follows:

  • Energy targets must be published and announced;
  • There must be an operational program to promote and support the use of thermal insulation, among other things;
  • The destination invests in renewable energy and has a percentage of total supply and consumption under its control;
  • Encouraging and motivating businesses to monitor and reduce their energy consumption.
