Criteria for duty exemption on used household effects

1. Both Thai and non-Thai residents relocating into Thailand are allowed to bring used household effects into Thailand in appropriate quantities with duty exemption, provided that the imported used household effects have been owned, possessed, and used in the country where the importers resided before entering to Thailand. In cases where the household effects are electrical appliances such as radios, only one unit each of such items is eligible for duty exemption. If it is a family relocation, two units of each item shall be entitled to duty exemption. And the duty-exempted units must have the lowest duty value. In addition to the radio, there may be refrigerators, television sets, etc., which are subject to the same criteria as radios. Such household effects must be imported to Thailand not later than 1 month before the importers arrive or not later than 6 months from the date the importers arrive. The Director-General of the Customs Department may extend the aforementioned deadline in special circumstances.

2. Foreigners who have relocated to the Kingdom and Thai government officials who are stationed in that foreign country, shall be exempt from household duty in a reasonable quantity.

3. Thai students or Thai civil servants who go to study or study abroad and Thai people who go abroad may bring in goods exempt from household duty. The condition is that they had ownership of such goods and used them in foreign countries as normally done before entering Thailand; also, such goods must be in a reasonable quantity and there must be evidence showing that they have been in foreign countries at least 1 year.
