Thailand improves quality control for fruit exports

The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has recently announced the new contamination screening measures for fresh fruit exports, which came into effect on 10 January 2025. Every fruit shipment must be tested to ensure that it is free of the coloring compound “Basic Yellow 2,” cadmium, and durian worms, as well as sulfur dioxide in longan. Exporters who violate the restrictions will face penalties. The pre-export screening measure aims to boost consumers’ confidence in Thai fruit products.

China is Thailand’s biggest export market for fresh fruits, with 89% of all exports. In 2024, the country exported over 1.8 million tons of fruits, worth approximately 134,954 billion baht (US$3.8 billion). Durian, mangosteen, and longan are Thailand’s major exported fruits.
