Thailand Advances Tipitaka English Version Project

Suphajee Suthumpun, Deputy Prime Minister and Chair of the patronage committee for the English version of the Tipitaka, chaired the committee’s first meeting of 2026 to review progress and discuss measures to advance the project.

The project aims to make merit and honor His Majesty the King Maha Vajiralongkorn on the auspicious occasion of his accession to the throne and his declaration as a patron of Buddhism. It also seeks to make the teachings of the Buddha more accessible to both Thai and international audiences. 

The project targets the publishing of an English-language edition of the Tipitaka, comprising 45 volumes and 21,941 pages: eight volumes of the Mahavibhaga (The Buddhist Monastic Law: The Great Analysis, Part 1), 25 volumes of the Digha Nikaya (The Long Discourses of the Buddha), and 12 volumes of the Dhammasangani.

Since the fiscal year of 2022, a subcommittee, chaired by Phra Brahmapundit, a member of the Sangha Supreme Council of Thailand and Abbott of Wat Prayurawongsawat, has overseen the translation and proofreading of the Tipitaka. To date, three volumes have been completed in book form, one from each of the three sections. 

The next phase will focus on verification and editorial work to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the work. The project will also prepare an e-book edition to expand access to the Tipitaka and its teachings in the digital era.
