The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) is continuing to develop hydro-floating solar hybrid power projects that combine floating solar farms with existing hydropower plants at major dams across the country. The projects are designed to increase renewable energy generation efficiency by using solar energy during the daytime while reserving hydropower generation for nighttime and peak demand periods. This integrated system also helps improve energy stability and supports Thailand’s long-term carbon neutrality goals.
One of the key projects is the hydro-floating solar hybrid power plant at Sirindhorn Dam in Ubon Ratchathani Province, which has an installed capacity of 45 megawatts and is recognized as one of the world’s largest floating solar farms integrated with hydropower systems. EGAT has also launched a 24-megawatt hydro-floating solar hybrid project at Ubol Ratana Dam in Khon Kaen Province. The project integrates solar power, hydropower, and battery energy storage systems to ensure continuous electricity generation and greater renewable energy reliability.
EGAT plans to further expand hydro-floating solar hybrid projects at several dams nationwide, including Bhumibol Dam and Srinagarind Dam, as part of Thailand’s renewable energy development strategy. The projects are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, optimize the use of existing dam infrastructure, and strengthen the country’s energy security through cleaner electricity production.
