Chulalongkorn University, as a leading public higher education institution, has strengthened cooperation with the ASEAN Vinyl Council and strategic partners to advance the sustainability of the PVC and vinyl industry through an international forum focused on knowledge-based collaboration. The initiative reflects the role of state-related academic institutions in supporting national policies on sustainable development, circular economy, and environmentally responsible industrial growth, while positioning Thailand as an active contributor to regional and global sustainability agendas.
The forum highlighted policy-relevant discussions on emerging global frameworks, including the new global plastics treaty, regional data on PVC recycling, and post-use management of medical materials. These exchanges aimed to enhance evidence-based policymaking, promote value creation from recycled PVC, and improve competitiveness across the supply chain. The collaboration between academic institutions, research bodies, and industry stakeholders demonstrated an integrated approach aligned with public sector goals of reducing environmental impact while maintaining industrial resilience.
A key outcome of the forum was the presentation of a pilot project on sustainable dental waste management, developed through cross-sector collaboration within the university system and regional partners. The project supports circular economy principles by establishing new standards for recycling and reuse of PVC-based medical waste, with potential scalability across public healthcare facilities. This initiative underscores the contribution of state-supported research and innovation to achieving long-term environmental benefits, greenhouse gas reduction targets, and sustainable material management at both national and regional levels.
