Thailand Aims to Become "Detroit of Asia" by Attracting 3 Major Chinese EV Brands

Thailand is accelerating its development of the electric vehicle (EV) industry!

Recently, Mr. Eknat Promphan, Minister of Industry, led intense negotiations with three Chinese giants—GAC Group, BYD, and Huawei—from March 4-7, 2025, to position Thailand as a global hub for EVs and cutting-edge technology.

Starting with GAC Group, Thailand reaffirmed its full support for EV manufacturing, especially in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), where GAC has established a factory in Amata City Industrial Estate, Rayong. The government is also enhancing infrastructure and incentive measures.

For BYD, Thailand emphasized policies promoting new energy vehicles and is moving forward with a request to reduce excise tax by 4% to boost Thailand as a leading EV supply chain base. Efforts are also underway to develop skilled personnel and R&D for sustainable growth.

Regarding Huawei, Thailand praised the company’s 5G, AI, and green energy technologies and invited investment in data centers and workforce development aligned with the BCG (Bio-Circular-Green) economy and carbon neutrality policies.

This reinforces Thailand’s vision as the “Detroit of Asia” and marks a significant step toward becoming a leader in the electric vehicle and clean technology industries in the region, confidently embracing the global trends of 2025!
