Thailand Tests Medical Drone Delivery in Phang Nga to Advance Healthcare Access in Island Areas

Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health has conducted a pilot test of medical drone delivery at Koh Panyee in Phang Nga province, aiming to improve healthcare accessibility in remote island communities. The initiative was led by the Minister of Public Health, together with executives from the Department of Medical Services and relevant aviation and security agencies. The demonstration highlighted the use of drones to transport medicines and medical supplies, addressing key limitations of sea-based transportation.

The Minister stated that the project is part of a national policy to integrate modern technology into the healthcare system, enhancing efficiency, reducing waiting times, and ensuring timely delivery of essential medical items such as vaccines, blood, and life-saving equipment. The pilot program covers three types of areas—coastal, mountainous, and urban—with ongoing trials in Krabi , Satun , and Phang Nga . Initial results show significant improvement, particularly in Krabi, where delivery time was reduced from 20 minutes to just 5 minutes.

Although delivery time in Phang Nga remains similar to conventional methods, drone operations offer greater reliability by eliminating dependence on boat schedules. Authorities plan to evaluate outcomes from all three pilot areas to further refine the system and develop a national prototype for Medical Drone services. Collaboration is also underway with the Civil Aviation Authority of
Thailand to establish dedicated medical flight routes and regulatory standards, with the long-term goal of integrating drone delivery into the country’s healthcare benefits system.
