Thailand and Bhutan established diplomatic relations in 1989 and have since maintained strong cooperation in tourism, education, healthcare, and culture. Thailand remains a top destination for Bhutanese travelers seeking medical care, education, and cultural exchange, further strengthening the bond between the peoples of both nations.
On March 14, 2025, the Bhutanese Ambassador to Thailand met with the Thai Prime Minister to reaffirm the close ties between the two countries and to discuss preparations for the royal visit. This upcoming visit, from April 25 to 28, 2025, will be the first official overseas trip by Their Majesties since the King’s accession to the throne. The visit highlights the deep respect and enduring relationship between the royal families of Thailand and Bhutan.
Economically, both countries are moving forward with negotiations on a Thailand–Bhutan Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which is expected to be signed during the 6th BIMSTEC Summit in Thailand this April, with the Bhutanese Prime Minister in attendance.
The longstanding and close relationship between Thailand and Bhutan, at both the leadership and people-to-people levels, is further strengthened by this historic royal visit and the upcoming FTA. These milestones reflect the mutual trust and deep cooperation between the two nations, paving the way for a strong and sustainable future together.
