Whale Shark Sightings Reflect Marine Abundance Around Koh Tao

Scuba divers exploring the waters off Koh Tao in Surat Thani province were thrilled to encounter majestic whale sharks, each measuring 3 to 4 meters, at two separate sites. These rare sightings are a testament to the richness and ecological health of the Gulf of Thailand.

The encounters took place at Chumphon Pinnacle, a deep-dive site to the northwest, and Sail Rock to the southeast, where divers filmed the gentle giants gliding gracefully among swirling schools of fish.
Koh Tao Tourism Association President Rumleuk Assavasin explained that June to September is the peak season for whale shark sightings around the island. During these months, marine animals are often seen at Chumphon Pinnacle, Sail Rock, Hin Khao, Tung Ku Pinnacle, the HTMS Phairin wreck, and other diving sites.

She pointed out that seeing whale sharks at several sites at once is a clear sign of a flourishing marine ecosystem, teeming with food and diverse life. This achievement is the fruit of ongoing conservation work by government agencies, private organizations, dive operators, and the local community.

The association president highlighted that these regular whale shark encounters strengthen Koh Tao’s standing as a world-class diving haven dedicated to sustainability. To protect this underwater paradise, local dive operators encourage visitors to respect wildlife by following strict guidelines: never touch, chase, or feed marine creatures, and always maintain a respectful distance to allow them to behave naturally.

Footage and images were provided by Beau Nampo, a diving instructor at Ban’s Diving Resort.
