Thailand Boosts Low-Carbon Rice Production, Fostering Green Economy & Reducing GHG

Thailand accelerates low-carbon rice production across a vast area in the Chao Phraya River basin, boosting environmentally friendly rice production and reducing greenhouse gas, or GHG, emissions.

With global focus shifting toward low-carbon products to fight climate change, Thailand, a leading rice exporter, must embrace sustainable practices. To this end, the country has developed wet-and-dry rice cultivation, a method that reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 30%. This approach not only mitigates climate change and PM2.5 pollution but also strengthens rice plants and enhances farmers' income.

Currently, more than 3,300 Thai farmers from 22 provinces have joined the wet-and-dry rice cultivation project covering over 10 million rai, or about 3.95 million acres of low-carbon rice production areas.

Thailand also develops microorganisms for decomposing rice straw and stubble rather than burning after harvesting. This helps both reduce environmental impact and increase soil fertility.

Thailand's advancements in low-carbon rice production will position the nation as a leader in the global market for sustainable agricultural products, bolstering its efforts to establish a green economy.
