Thailand Advances Blue Carbon Strategy to Support Net Zero Goal

Thailand is reinforcing its climate action efforts through mangrove conservation, as Suchart Chomklin, Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, opened the 16th National Mangrove Seminar 2026 in Chanthaburi Province. Organized by the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, the event marks Thailand’s National Mangrove Day and serves as a platform for experts, government agencies, communities, and private-sector partners to exchange knowledge on mangrove restoration and coastal sustainability.

The seminar, held at the King Rama IX International Mangrove Botanical Garden, included mangrove tree planting activities, marine animal releases, and exhibitions from environmental and corporate networks under the Thailand Mangrove Alliance. Participants also discussed ways to address climate change and strengthen ecosystem resilience through innovation and collaboration.

Minister Suchart emphasized the importance of mangrove forests as a major source of ‘Blue Carbon,’ which helps absorb greenhouse gases and supports Thailand’s goal of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050. He noted that mangroves not only store carbon, but also protect coastlines, reduce pollution, and preserve marine biodiversity, making them a key part of the country’s long-term environmental strategy.
