Songkhla Lake.

Thailand has many lakes scattered in many provinces across the country but one of the most outstanding lakes in Thailand is “Songkhla Lake”.  

It has a distinctive feature as a “lagoon” lake, which is fresh water from many canals flowing into the lake before flowing out to the Gulf of Thailand, resulting in salt water from the sea flowing into the mix. It is one of the outstanding 117 lakes around the world and is also the largest lake in the country, covering 3 provinces: Phatthalung, Songkhla, and Nakhon Si Thammarat.

“Songkhla Lake” is an area with great potential, value, and natural prominence. It is a source of mixed ecosystems including tropical rain forests, mangrove forests, and swamp forests. There are water resources in both freshwater and lake sections which include fresh water, salt water, and brackish water.

It is also a region rich in history, cultural arts, customs, and a way of life, as well as tourism-related activities that can give visitors awe-inspiring experiences. These factors can be promoted and encouraged to help the region become a role model for sustainable tourism management. It is a tourism destination that will draw and encourage traveler attendance.  

     The government therefore announced “Songkhla Lake” is a special area for sustainable tourism under the vision “Lifestyle of the Songkhla Lake Basin: Model of Sustainable Ecotourism and Cultural Tourism”. It is estimated that there will be approximately 7-8 million Thai and foreign tourists traveling to the area per year, which will generate income of over 40 billion baht per year.
