Eight great local dishes in Loei

     You may have heard of the wide range of tourist attractions Loei possesses. But here, I'd like to extend an invitation to you to sample eight delectable Loei-only dishes that are made with regional products and traditional spices. If you've tried them, I think you’ll agree that the flavor is simply amazing, and you can't help but exclaim “Wow.”

  1. Khao Piak Sen: This dish is great served hot at any time of day and is made with soft, chewy noodles and pork sausage, pork pieces, and fried shallots. You may also add a soft-boiled egg and adjust the seasoning to your liking.
  2. Khao Pun with Jaew Sauce (Chiang Khan recipe): Use Khanom Jeen as a paste in a cup and add pork entrails. Add cabbage and top it with mellow soup, seasoned with chili, sugar, fish sauce, and sour sauce, which will make it all so “nua” (well blended).
  3. Papaya Salad Dong Daeng: The method of making this is similar to Papaya Salad with Khanom Jeen but it uses freshly squeezed Khanom Jeen, which has a fatter and shorter shape than normal Kanom Jeen, to experiment with a soft and chewy texture.
  4. Papaya Salad with Sathon vegetable water: Dansai villagers take the young shoots and young leaves of Phak Sathon, a local vegetable, and ferment them for a long time. It has a mellow taste, so some use it instead of fish sauce, and it is used to season foods such as papaya salad, jaew, and miang, and it’s good for health lovers.
  5. Grilled Mekong prawns: These grilled prawns are made from Mekong River prawns that are captured by Chiang Khan fishermen and placed on sticks that are carefully arranged before being cooked over charcoal, resulting in the wonderful flavor, fragrant perfume, and the stunning natural color of grilled shrimp and crab.
  6. Jub Phak (Tai Dam): This is a local dish of villagers in Na Pa Nad, Chiang Khan District. It’s blanched and seasoned with ginger or galangal, giving it a very nice aroma. It's delicious and super healthy.
  7. Phae Prawn: This dish combines shredded shrimp from the Mekong with flour. It is fried until the batter is slightly crisp and then served with sweet sauce, containing red onion and cucumber. It's delicious for those people who love shredded shrimp.
  8. Khao Pun Hon: This dish is made from freshly squeezed rice noodles topped with Jaew juice obtained from pounding it; you can choose the level of spiciness and make it sour or sweet, as you like. There are other recipes in which people might add fermented fish sauce, or not.
