Development of the Modified Electric Vehicle Industry in Manufacturing Centers in ASEAN

Development of the Modified Electric Vehicle Industry in Manufacturing Centers in ASEAN

Nowadays, electric vehicles are becoming more attractive and are replacing vehicles that use fuel because they do not emit pollutants that are harmful to the environment. The use of electric vehicles reduces fuel consumption, as well. In many countries, electric vehicles are already widely used.

Although the government subsidizes the use of electric vehicles in Thailand, electric cars are still relatively expensive, in comparison with conventional cars. Therefore, the concept of developing the modified electric vehicle industry has emerged, encouraging the conversion of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles into electric vehicles and maintaining the base of the Thai auto parts and production industry affected by the production of electric vehicles.

The National Electric Vehicle Policy Committee has assigned the Ministry of Industry to set up a sub-committee to drive the operation of modified electric vehicles (EV conversions), comprising 29 relevant departments, with the Office of Industrial Product Standards.

The EV Conversion sub-committee secretary has the mandate to establish guidelines for the development of the modified electric vehicle industry, including cars, pickup trucks, motorcycles, tricycles, buses, trucks, boats, electric trains, and electric vehicle parts that are produced in the country, in order to compete sustainably.

They also provide measures for the development of the modified electric vehicle industry to prepare for the transition of Thailand to be the center of the electric vehicle manufacturing industry in the ASEAN region, including the management and development of skilled workers to support the modified electric vehicle industry and other related parts or missions.

The Office of Industrial Standards is preparing standards related to modified electric vehicles, including parts for modified electric motorcycles.

In addition, two industry standards have been developed for SMEs: Modification of Electric Vehicle Service, Tis. S221-2566 and Tis. S2222-2566.
