The Deputy Government Spokesperson disclosed developments in the Government’s effort to help Thai citizens in Sudan, ensuring that more than 200 Thai are safe and well taken care of. They are expected to return to Thailand on 27 April 2023.
On 24 April, concerned agencies met to learn updates on the situation. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 212 Thai citizens and three foreign spouses registered for repatriation. Arrangements were made for them to assemble at a safe spot for evacuation, but communication was complicated because of an internet problem. So, authorities had to play it by ear and finalized the number of evacuees on the spot.
On the afternoon of 24 April, the Royal Thai Embassy in Cairo, in collaboration with the Honorary Consulate in Khartoum, evacuated over 200 Thai citizens in Sudan by bus to a safe spot outside the capital for later repatriation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also liaised with the neighboring countries, i.e., Saudi Arabia and Egypt, to seek permission for air routes of the Royal Thai Air Force aircraft over these countries. As a result, the repatriation aircraft is expected to arrive at Don Mueang International Airport on 27 April at around 20.00 hr.
The Deputy Government Spokesperson also provided an update on the morning of 25 April. 212 Thai citizens and three foreign spouses had safely arrived in Port Sudan. They will board a ship provided by the Saudi Arabian government to Jeddah for repatriation by the Thai Air Force aircraft, scheduled to leave from Thailand for Jeddah in the evening, on the 25th.
