Medical tourism in Thailand is growing steadily. Thailand is one of the world’s medical tourism destinations due to its advantages in high service quality and treatment efficiency and cost-effective medical expenses. In addition, Thailand has many natural attractions ideal for recuperation period and medical facilities accredited by “JCI” (Joint Commission International Accreditation) standards at higher level compare to the competitors in the region. However, there are some problems with direct medical expense reimbursement from the federal or local governments. This results in bad debt from failure in debt collection which affects the provision of health services by the hospitals.
Strategy 2 of the Development of Thailand into Thailand Medical Hub therefore relates to the development of direct medical expense reimbursement system from foreign governments, including reimbursement from private health insurance companies in case citizens of those countries come to receive medical treatment in Thailand via G to G or G to B agreement.
There are guidelines for negotiating/making mutual agreements in the form of G to G or G to B or potential insurance companies/large insurance companies in foreign countries. This initiative will be applied to the target countries in order for the foreign tourists who are insured in their own country to be able to reimburse medical expenses and exercise their rights according to the details of the policy in case of receiving medical treatment in Thailand, including considering the possibility of execution of a contract or agreement.
