Coconut Shell and Lychee Leaf Tie Dye Cloth: From Traditional Wisdom to Nanotechnology Product

The Agriculture Community Enterprise of Bang Yi Rong, Bang Khonthi, Samut Songkhram, is a group of locals whose primary occupation has traditionally been coconut farming. However, due to the falling prices of their produce, the community banded together to develop value-added products, namely "Cold-extracted Coconut Oil".

During the production process, they noticed a large amount of coconut shell waste. This inspired the community to create "Tie Dye Cloth from Coconut Shell", combining their traditional knowledge with innovation from the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA). Their collaboration resulted in high-quality, unique community identity tie-dye cloth from coconut shells. Not only does this initiative increase local income, but by transforming waste into a new product, it promotes efficient resource use, minimizes waste, and is environmentally friendly.

The success of the Agriculture Community Enterprise extends to the solution for the "Kom strain" Lychee (Litchi chinensis Sonn), a geographical indication (GI) fruit of the province facing low yield issues. They use lychee leaves to produce orange, brown, and gray tones, while the coconut shell gives a dark brown tone. These unique community products have helped create jobs and significantly increase income.

Currently, the natural dye tie-dye cloth from "coconut shell and lychee leaf" is further developed into clothing, hats, scarves, bags, fabric, and other products sold both at the community enterprise store and in department stores.

Moreover, the enterprise serves as a learning center for coconut product processing and natural dye tie-dye cloth making, open to tourists and those interested. This is one of the successful models that address the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) economic model by applying science, technology, and innovation to elevate local raw materials into products that provide sustainable employment for the community.
