Lesson Learned for SMEs To Develop Eco-Packaging and Seize the Opportunity to Grow Business in the Green Era

Has brought awareness to jointly reduce greenhouse gas

With the world-saving trend that consumers are increasingly conscious of the environment, making products or products, including packaging that is environmentally friendly or Eco-Packaging more popular, together with the trend of building Green Economy that has become a universal rule around the world, has brought awareness to jointly reduce greenhouse gas and environmental problems, especially in industrialized countries, resulting in adaptation in the development of products that are harmless the environment.

In Thailand, the Department of Industrial Promotion and the Institute of Packaging and Recycling for the Environment jointly promote the industrial sector, small and medium enterprises or SMEs to develop environmentally friendly packaging starting from the design process to the end of the packaging piloted in 4 target industries:

- Printing packaging industry
- Industries related to packaging materials
- S-Curve industries such as agriculture and biotechnology industries, food processing industries
- New S- Curve industry such as products for the elderly health products and pharmaceuticals, herbal medicines, etc.

For the development process of eco-friendly products such as confectionery products, there has been a change from foil bags labeled with a sticker. Instead, they change to PET Lamimate Aul bags with zip foil and labels on the bags and use environmentally friendly inks such as soy base or water base or eco solvent ink, etc. With this method, it also reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
Corresponding with the Department of International Trade Promotion, which has expanded the environmentally friendly packaging market into the Chinese market (2022), it was found that the issuance of restrictions on limiting the use of plastic in China clearly states that supermarkets and fresh markets will not offer free plastic bags and in 2021 it has the strictest plastic ban in view of such pressure.

Resulting in food and beverage entrepreneurs to start using more environmentally friendly packaging, it is expected that in 2025, the demand for biodegradable plastics in the food and beverage industry will reach nearly 2.10 million tons of biodegradable plastic. The average price is 25,000 yuan per ton or about 132,500 baht per ton (exchange rate 1 yuan equals 5.3 baht), reflecting that the demand for biodegradable products in the food and beverage industry is worth at least 52.5 billion yuan or 278.250 million baht.

This adaptation to the development of Eco-Packaging allows both Thai and foreign entrepreneurs who have developed and are about to start developing products with environmentally friendly packaging and may have more distribution channels. In addition to other positive effects that occur during the production period, costs are reduced in the long run and have a good image for the organization.
