Tourism development goals under the BCG model

        The tourism sector is one of the strategic sectors that can drive the BCG economy. Growth needs to be accelerated yet be sustainable, as it is an economic activity that not only helps create jobs and distribute income directly to local people, but also encourages biodiversity and culture, including abundant natural resources, to attract and create comfort for tourists. 

        As a result, the development of the tourism sector with the BCG economy model focuses on sustainable growth of the tourism sector, namely efficient use of resources, added value, awareness of impacts on the environment and society, reduction of inequality and distribution of income to community tourist attractions or in secondary tourist cities, and an increase of income from tourism by 3 trillion baht, which is approximately 18% of GDP.The following five-year goals will decide its success:

  • 10% increase in tourism income from secondary cities per year;
  • Higher income from local activities, such as accommodation, food, herbs, and local quality products’
  • Increased income and employment in communities through community tourism activities;
  • Participation of communities in the systematic development of the area;
  • Tourist attractions meeting international sustainability standards;
  • Tourism growing sustainably with “Social and Environmental Responsibility.”

        In addition, it also focuses on developing Thailand as a quality tourist destination that increases income for the country, communities, and local tourism under the brand, ”Travel with confidence, fun, and safety,” along with the concept of Happy Model, which consists of the following:

  1. “Eating well” means to eat clean, healthy, non-toxic, and local food selected from the community;
  2. “Staying well” means to stay in clean, standard accommodation, with a good environment, and with facilities such as Wi-Fi, along with health promotion activities;
  3. “Exercising well” means to participate in sports activities and recreation;
  4. “Sharing good things” means to share knowledge, recommend good things, join in activities with the locals, and learn from folk wisdom.
