Penetrating the Muslim market: The next Muslim tourism

     Currently, the Muslim tourist market is a group that is continually growing at a high rate. Muslims worldwide account for 1 in 4 of the total global population, with more than 240 million people in the ASEAN group. It is a sizable potential market where Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei are considered major markets for Thailand. According to the Pew Research Center, it is expected that the number of Muslims worldwide will increase to 2.2 billion by 2030, or 26.4% of the world population. Thailand is among the top 5 favorite destinations for Muslim tourists, as per the Global Muslim Travel Index 2022.

     Recently, the Department of Tourism has held several training events with an aim of penetrating the Muslim market, with the first area being Chonburi Province. 

"The Next Muslim Tourism" event was organized on 14-15 June, inviting service providers to attend training for tourism potential development. The highlights of the event were as follows:

  • “Seizing new opportunities... the Muslim tourist market is booming”, by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pakorn Preeyakorn, Director of the Halal Standard Institute of Thailand.
  • “Delving into the behavior of Muslim tourists in each market segment”, by Mr. Aman Mad-adam, Director of Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Krabi Office.
  • “Adjusting service design to expand the customer base of Muslim tourists (hotel-resort-restaurant business)”, by Ms. Kusuma Kinglek, Managing Director of Ao Nang Princeville Villa Resort and Spa.
  • “Penetrating the comprehensive Muslim tourist market on the platform”, by Mr. Kandit Sriworapan, Executive of the Makan Halal Guide platform.
