The GSTC criteria for sustainable environment in wastewater

     The GSTC criteria were devised to create global understanding about sustainable tourism, because travelers should not only be concerned about an economic valuation assessment, but also resource and environmental preservation, including different cultures and community change. The destinations should set basic criteria for sustainability of the environment, especially waste management and pollution. And wastewater management is one of their prioritizations.

     A destination should have clear and enforced guidelines in place for siting, maintaining, and testing discharge from septic tanks and wastewater treatment systems. The destination should ensure that wastes are properly treated and reused or released safely without adverse impacts on the local population and the environment.

Indicators are the following:

  1. Written guidelines and regulations on wastewater treatment;
  2. System of enforcing guidelines amongst enterprises;
  3. Monitoring and testing of released wastewater;
  4. Provision of sustainable municipal water treatment systems, for use by the tourism sector, where practical and appropriate.
