Community-based tourism routes at the old town Chanthaboon riverfront

One-day trip to the old town Chanthaboon riverfront

Located in the eastern region of Thailand, Chanthaburi is one of the most popular destinations for many people who would like to enjoy nature, since it is just three hours away from Bangkok. There are a lot of natural tourist spots, such as beaches, mountains, and waterfalls. Therefore, we would like to invite all of you to experience the charming sense of an old city and original way of life of people living in this province by visiting the old town Chanthaboon riverfront, where the slogan is  “Return to Chanthaburi’s Way, Create a Thai Way.”

The old town Chanthaboon riverfront is an approximately 100-year-old community established around the beginning of the Rattanakosin period. Chinese and Vietnamese people at that time moved to settle down on the west side of the Chanthaburi River, and that area was called “Ban Lum.” Then, in the reign of King Rama V, this area was developed into a business center, since its location made it suitable for water transportation. Nowadays, the road along the riverside is full of antique buildings and has become a cultural attraction.

Walking from Chanthanaram temple to Talad Lang community, or the pier, houses, buildings and shops that have existed for almost 100 years stand along the way. It is an architectural style adopted from westerners because, in the reign of King Rama V, Thais and foreigners did many kinds of business together. Therefore, you will see houses or buildings constructed in “ginger bread” style, whose doors, windows, and roof corners were delicately and uniquely crafted by Chantaburi’s artisans; one fine example is the way the craftsmen engraved a ventilator as a bas relief sculpture of a tiger’s head with tree branches.

The riverfront community is remarkable for its architecture and way of life. All shops and restaurants are harmonious with the environment, giving the scene an antique feeling. Some interesting places you should not miss are the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, built in Gothic architectural style, similar to the Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris, decorated with beautiful stained glass windows. Another building is the 150-year-old Baan Luang Rajamaitri historic inn, whose original owner was once a pioneer in the rubber market in the East. And there is a picturesque century-old Chinese herb and medical shop, Jang Kwong An. Travelers can take photos of the art painted on the walls.
