Historical Tourism: Wat Phu Khao Thong and the Buddha Image Wearing a Manohra Crown in Trang
Trang has many tourist attractions, both natural and cultural, as well as unique local food. The city is also famous for its temples and shrines.
Wat Phu Khao Thong is an unmissable old temple that is very important to the people of Trang. It is located at Moo 1, Nam Phud Subdistrict, which is 20 kilometers away from downtown Trang.
The highlight of this temple is the 1,000-year-old Buddha image wearing a Manohra crown or tiara, based on the crown worn by Manohra dancers – the only Buddha image in the reclining, nirvana posture in Thailand that wears a Manohra crown. It is believed to have been built during the Sri Wichai era. The statue is 8.22 meters long and situated in a shelter inside a cave. It was registered by the Fine Arts Department as one of 20 historical sites in Trang.
The statue is greatly respected by local people, who admire Kru Mo Manohra, as well as by many people traveling to pay respect to the statue. The temple is open daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with no entrance fee.
