Historical Tourism: Follow the Legend of Tri Treung City in Kamphaeng Phet Province

Kamphaeng Phet has a long and fascinating history and is one of UNESCO’s World Heritage cities, as well, included as part of the Sukhothai World Heritage site. There are many historical tourist attractions for you to learn about, and one of them is Tri Treung City, which is an old town located at Ban Wang Pra Tat, Tri Treung Subdistrict, Mueang Kamphaeng Phet District – approximately 16 kilometers from the town.

Although many of the oldest historical sites are rather run down, with only a few remaining pagodas or bases left, the atmosphere is still special. It is said that the city was built in B.E. 1542 (999 C.E.), during King Chai Siri's escape from the enemy from Chiang Rai.

Even so, the remaining wall of Tri Treung City still stands in a rectangular shape, parallel with the Ping River; it is 450 meters wide and about 800 meters long, with two entrance gates to the city.

Within the walls, you will see many religious historical sites, and there are two important temples: Wat Jet Yod and Wat Pra Prang. Outside the wall on the south, there is a huge temple called Wat Wang Pra Tat, with mainly Thai-style pagodas.

During the archeological explorations, archeologists discovered small, tinted beads, ancient Roman lamps, and small pieces of porcelain scattered all over the area of Wat Wang Pra Tat, as well.
