Historical Tourism at Wiang Kum Kam, the Ancient City in Chiang Mai Province

Chiang Mai is one of many tourist destinations popular for its nature and cool climate; however, if you love history, you can travel back in time at Wiang Kum Kam, the Ancient City, a capital of the former Lanna Kingdom and over 700 years old.

Wiang Kum Kam is an important historical site built in B.E. 1829-1838 (1286-1295 C.E.) during the reign of King Mangrai, as an experimental city, before becoming the present city of Chiang Mai.

The location is around the area between the old and new Ping River covering Ta Wang Tarn Subdistrict in Sarattee District, including Pha Dad and Nong Hoi subdistricts in Mueang Chiang Mai district – around 3 square kilometers.

Interesting tourist attractions in Wiang Kum Kam are the square pagoda temple, Wat Chang Kum, Wat Taat Kao, Wat Hua Nong, and others. Furthermore, you can take a horse carriage or a tram with a volunteer tour guide to go around and learn some of the interesting history.

Wiang Kum Kam is open for visitors daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the entrance fee is 10 baht. You can drive yourself around or take one of the horse carriages managed by the Information Center of Wiang Kum Kam, which costs 300 baht; it has two seats and takes around 45 minutes.
