Creative Tourism: Engraving Chinaware at Ban Kao Noi in Sukhothai Province
The chinaware produced at Ban Kao Noi is top-quality pottery; the surface is coated and engraved with beautiful patterns, then burnt in a high-heat fire. It is considered a cultural heritage of Sukhothai – telling the stories of the past. Although the traditional process of making chinaware is lost, people at Ban Kao Noi Community at Sri Satchanalai District in Sukhothai have been preserving the craft and have developed it as an activity for tourists or individuals who are interested to learn and do it themselves. They will be closely taught by skilled and experienced craftsmen. The finished product can be taken home as an excellent souvenir, as well.
Of course, the uniqueness of the chinaware is its patterns, originally drawn by Sukhothai craftsmen. There are various patterns for visitors to choose to draw, such as a lotus, peony, a clump of seaweed, a fish, Nak or dragon, a swan, waves, arrows, chevrons, a sun, clouds, a wheel, and stars, to name only a few.
