Thailand and Vietnam Advance Strategic Partnership

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul met with To Lam, general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and president of Vietnam, at the Presidential Palace in Hanoi to discuss cooperation and advance the Thailand-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to accelerating cooperation through existing mechanisms, including the Thailand-Vietnam Joint Cabinet Retreat. They also endorsed the Three Connects Strategy and set a shared goal of boosting bilateral trade to over 25 billion US dollars.

The two sides agreed to enhance coordination among defense, security, and maritime agencies and to enhance law-enforcement cooperation. Thailand proposed a new “2+2” consultation mechanism involving the foreign and defense ministers of both countries. The Thai premier also reiterated that Thai territory would not be used for any activities directed against friendly nations.

On economic issues, Anutin raised concerns from Thai investors regarding regulatory and business challenges in Vietnam. To Lam responded by affirming that the Vietnamese government values Thai investment and is actively working to address these concerns.

The two leaders also discussed environmental cooperation. Thailand reaffirmed its readiness to transfer 12 sarus cranes to Vietnam this year, a project both governments view as a living symbol of their longstanding friendship.
