Basic information about cannabis that tourists should know
It is well known that many countries around the world have focused on the utilization of hemp and marijuana for medical use, including Thailand, where the law has now been unlocked so that people can apply different parts of marijuana and hemp for use, now that it is no longer classified as a narcotic drug. Therefore, this is a good opportunity for everyone, including tourists, to learn the basic information and understand the properties of marijuana well to prevent misuse problems.
Cannabis is a flowering plant in the family Cannabaceae, with the scientific name Cannabis sativa L. subsp. Indica, and commonly known as marijuana, cannabis, pot, and many other names. The leaves are very green and have 5-7 lobes. In cannabis, there are more than 500 different substances, with the most active substances in the cannabinoids group, and at least 100 of these substances are active substances that are effective in stimulating the nerves to create intoxication and varying degrees of hallucination.
Cannabis is a plant in the same family as hemp, but the two plants differ in that the active ingredient in hemp is found to be the most abundant in cannabidiol (CBD). This non-psychotropic chemical has a sedative, anti-agitation, and anti-hallucinogenic effect, whereas cannabis contains a large amount of the active ingredient THC, as well as cannabidiol.
The Ministry of Public Health has determined that specific parts of the cannabis and hemp plants may be permitted for use without classifying them as narcotics, as follows:
And to prevent misuse, the Ministry of Public Health has issued a “marijuana handbook” for tourists online, titled “10 Things Tourists Need to Know about Cannabis in Thailand,” to raise visitors’ awareness of how cannabis may be used in Thailand. It is available through the Ministry of Public Health website, www.moph.go.th.
