“Phuket Pearl” means round and hemispherical pearls with white, cream, pink to yellow gold tones, produced by the method that has been passed on in the seas around Phuket and the surrounding islands within Phuket. Due to the Andaman Sea’s topography, the water fluctuates twice daily (morning and evening), which keeps the water clean, has more sediment flow than other areas, and produces a rich plankton population that provides natural food for pearl oysters as well as a temperature that is conducive to oyster growth. These factors affect the growth of pearl oysters. Pearl oysters grow fast and consequently produce pearls faster.
The local communities that produce goods gain from the geographical indication registration of Phuket pearls. Geographical indications are used as a marketing tool to enhance products, as well as a tool to promote local knowledge and production standards, and they also add value to community-produced goods.
