Historical Tourism: 3,000-Year-Old Color Paintings Sightseeing Cruise in Krabi
Krabi is another destination that is highly desired by many Thai and foreign tourists who would like to experience the beauty of the world-famous sea, but do you know that there are historical attractions you can take a boat to see, as well?
There are ancient, colored paintings that are visible on the cliff of Khao Kien in Phang Nga Bay, Mueang District, which is along the route to Koh Panyee. The paintings include animal figures, and after a study performed by the Fine Arts Department, it was confirmed that they were over 3,000 years old. The paintings are believed to have been drawn by the navigators of the past, who probably made stops here to find shelter from storms.
The paintings on the side of the cliff are clearly visible when the boat passes to the east of the mountain, and they appear in various drawing techniques, such as lined patterns, outlining the outer frame, shaded ones, and the ones with details on the inside, with and without outlining.
The paintings can be categorized into seven groups: the ones in red, yellow, and orange colors, the ones that are outlined and shaded, the ones of sea creatures, such as dolphins and crabs, and the ones of land animals, such as the birds and lizards that can be found in this area.
