Using carbon footprint reduction labels is a good way to demonstrate that your business is helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions or that it has a low amount of emissions per unit of goods or services. It also gives consumers a choice when purchasing products or services, and the product benefits because it has been included in the list of environmentally friendly materials under the Thai's Rating of Energy and Environmental Sustainability (TREES), which focuses on foreign manufacturers who want an image of environmental protection that goes with the policy of the parent company, in order to be able to access the green building materials market in foreign countries.
Overall, in Thailand, eight groups of carbon labels have been issued, as follows:
The criteria for applying for a carbon footprint reduction label or global warming reduction label are as follows (either #1 or #2 may apply):
1. Decreased carbon footprint of products (compared with the carbon footprint of the product in the base year) is the assessment of the current year's greenhouse gas emissions compared with the greenhouse gas emission data of the product in the base year; it should be found that the GHG emission of the product decreased by not less than 2%. Or
2. The carbon footprint of the products is lower than or equal to the performance benchmark of each product group, referring to the assessment of the greenhouse gas emissions of the product. When compared with the performance benchmarks of the same type of products, it should be found that the greenhouse gas emissions of the products were lower than or equal to the performance benchmarks.
However, products that are registered for the carbon footprint reduction mark must pass certain criteria. Thailand currently has a list of environmentally friendly products and services, (information as of December 2022) using the carbon footprint label. There are 127 companies that have met the criteria, covering 921 products, such as construction products and household products, which can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 72,708,733 tons CO2e (equivalent tonnes of carbon dioxide).
Interested entrepreneurs may submit an application for registration for the use of carbon reduction labels for their products with the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization) (TGO), or view details on the website: http://thaicarbonlabel.tgo.or.th. If the application is approved, a carbon reduction label for products will be valid for 3 years from the date of receipt of the Hazard Registration. After 3 years, the entrepreneurs must submit the documents for renewal of the Carbon Reduction Label within 180 days before the expiration of the label.
