Betong Mist Mangosteen A Native Fruit of Yala Gains GI Status Elevating National Fame

The Department of Intellectual Property has officially registered the "Betong Mist Mangosteen" as the latest Geographical Indication (GI) product from Yala Province. This marks the fourth GI product from the region, following Bannang Sata Stone Bananas, Yala’s Drip-Dry Durian, and Betong Shogun Oranges. The standout feature of this mangosteen variety is its large, round fruit with a thick, glossy rind that turns a deep purple-black when ripe. Inside, the flesh is creamy white, resembling cotton, with a fragrant aroma and a sweet taste balanced by a hint of tartness. Its unique flavor profile is attributed to being grown in an area almost perpetually covered in mist, which significantly influences the fruit’s texture and taste.

The cultivation area for this mangosteen is located in the Betong and Than To districts.

These areas experience a distinctive climate with morning fog, intense midday sun, and evening rain. Such environmental conditions promote the growth of high-quality fruit, allowing exports valued at over 62 million baht.

By 2025, Thailand boasts approximately 232 registered GI products nationwide, covering nearly every province. The number of registered goods continues to grow, spanning a wide range of agricultural produce, rice, textiles, beverages, and processed foods, all bearing unique characteristics tied to their origin.

Geographical Indications (GI) serve as a protection system for products that reflect a specific geography, culture, or local wisdom. Registering a GI product not only enhances its market value but also elevates production standards, ensures quality control, and boosts consumer confidence domestically and abroad.

The case of the "Betong Mist Mangosteen" exemplifies how geography and local knowledge can be leveraged as strengths to build a brand. This approach focuses on quality and verified uniqueness rather than competing on volume, aligning perfectly with the national strategy to promote GI products.
